Seattle, WA - Wednesday, Feb. 23 at approximately 7:00 a.m., implosion officials will detonate a small number of explosive test charges at the Kingdome. The test will be used to precisely measure the strength and characteristics of the Kingdome's concrete. Officials will use data from the test to accurately determine the final amount of explosives to be used in the Kingdome implosion.
Wednesday's test detonation will create a sound roughly comparable to a clap of thunder, and will be audible only to neighbors in the immediate area. No other tests are planned.
For safety reasons, no one will be allowed to observe the test in progress. However, media will be escorted to the location of the detonation immediately following the test to observe results.
Interested media should meet in the
Kingdome's North Parking Lot (outside of the jobsite perimeter fence)
no later than 6:45 a.m.
Enter at Second Avenue and King Street Gate
Implosion contractor Mark Loizeaux, president and chief executive officer of Controlled Demolition, Inc., will be available after the test to briefly answer questions. Tom Gerlach, vice president of Turner Construction, will also be available to provide a general demolition update.
