Stadium Crews Prepare to Hoist Massive Roof Truss

** MEDIA ALERT/PHOTO OPPORTUNITY

Raise the Roof: This weekend marks start of roof installation process

What:      Starting this weekend, crews working on Washington's new Football/Soccer Stadium will begin installing massive segments of roof truss that, once connected, will span the entire length of the Stadium from north to south.

The first segment -- 130 feet long and weighing in at a whopping 196,000 pounds -- will be hoisted on Sunday using three cranes, marking the official beginning of the roof-building process.

This Friday morning, as crews are busy rigging the giant truss segments in preparation for the hoist, officials will be on site to explain how the pieces fit together to form the Stadium's sweeping roof, designed to cover 70 percent of the seats.

When:      Friday, Feb. 2, 10 a.m.

Who:      Fred Mendoza, Vice Chair, Public Stadium Authority, will deliver a construction update before Bob Collier, Vice President, First & Goal Inc., leads a site hardhat tour and provides details about the truss installation. Project representatives will be available for interviews.

Where:      Media should meet at the jobsite security gate in the North Parking Lot (Adjacent to King Street) no later than 10 a.m.

Details:      The roof on the East side of the Stadium is scheduled to be complete by early May. Work on the West side roof will begin shortly thereafter.
