The demolition contractor has been chosen by First & Goal and Turner Construction for demolition of the Kingdome, planned for early 2000.
The contract has been awarded to Aman Environmental Construction Inc. of Covina, California who will perform the actual preparation, salvage and post implosion concrete processing and recycling work, in conjunction with Controlled Demolition, Inc (CDI) of Phoenix, Maryland, who will develop the implosion plan and perform the demolition of the Kingdome Structure.
"We are pleased to have these highly-qualified contractors on our team," said Tom Gerlach, General Manager of Turner Construction in Seattle, the company hired to build the new Stadium and Exhibition Center. "Together, they have more than 60 years of demolition experience with large projects such as this." Gerlach continued, "We are confident in their ability to carry out this job with minimal impact on the surrounding area."
Controlled Demolition (CDI) is recognized as the innovator and global leader in the controlled demolition and implosion of structures. CDI is a family owned business founded by Jack Loizeaux 52 years ago. Jack's sons, Mark and Doug currently run the company's operations. CDI has an unmatched 52-year record of imploding and demolishing over 7000 structures internationally. Their experience includes all environmental operations, controlled demolition, explosive demolition and implosion of buildings, bridges and other structures.
Recently, CDI imploded the St. Louis Arena in February, the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas last year and the Anacortes chimney in Anacortes, WA earlier this year. CDI holds the world record for implosion of the tallest standing concrete building ever felled with explosives: the 361-ft. tall Mendes Caldeira Building in São Paulo Brazil on November 16, 1975.
Aman Environmental Construction Inc. was founded by Steve Aman in 1988 and performs an average of $50 million worth of demolition and remediation work a year. In 1993 Aman joined forces with the Dames & Moore Group, one of the nation's largest environmental consulting firms. Aman will coordinate its initial efforts on the Kingdome project through the Seattle office of Dames & Moore.
In January 2000, the workers will begin dismantling the Kingdome to prepare it for actual demolition. Any and all reusable materials such as seats, benches, lights, equipment, etc, will be taken out until a bare shell is left. The actual implosion is expected to take place in March or April of 2000.
Now that the contractors for this project have been selected, First & Goal and Turner Construction will complete the details of the full implosion plan which will be submitted to the appropriate city, county and state agencies for review.
Together, Aman and CDI have estimated that over 95% of the Kingdome and its materials will be recycled and either re-used in the new stadium or used for other projects.
Paul G. Allen formed First & Goal Inc. in 1997 to manage his interest in the development, construction, and operation of the football/soccer stadium and exhibition center. Groundbreaking on the new facilities took place in September 1998.
The Public Stadium Authority will be the owner of the new stadium. The PSA was created by the state legislature after passage of Referendum 48 in 1997.
