A national Call for Artists to participate in the new Washington State football/soccer Stadium and Exhibition Center has concluded with 22 artists selected to develop specific proposals for works that might be included in the project.
A total of 254 responses to the project's request for qualifications were received, including artists whose works are two and three dimensional, environmental, and conceptual and time-based. The 22 artists chosen for the next stage of proposal development were announced today at the regular meeting of the Board of the Washington State Public Stadium Authority, the agency that will own the $430 million facility.
The selections were made by a 12-member Art Selection Committee that includes artists; arts professionals; representatives of the project's surrounding neighborhoods; the Vice-Chair of the PSA Board; a representative from the project's private partner, First & Goal Incorporated; and a representative from eastern Washington.
The artists who will be asked to submit specific project proposals are:

Although the voter-approved Referendum 48 that created the project did not require an art program, First & Goal, the entity created by Paul G. Allen to represent the Seahawks' interest in the project, agreed to contribute $1.75 million for works of art. Administrative support for the art program is also being provided in-kind by First & Goal.
The mission of the Project's art program is as follows:
- To engage both regionally and nationally-known professional artists to create artworks that capture the public's interest and imagination.
- To select artwork so compelling that visitors from around the world will come expressly to see it.
- To represent a diverse range of cultural and artistic perspectives.
- The works will be source of pride for the entire region.
Jody Patton, Vice-Chair of First & Goal, commented on the artists selected by the Committee: "The 22 artists chosen by the Art Selection Committee bring a wide range of regional, national, and international experience to this project. We look forward to seeing innovative proposals that will engage and capture the public's interest."
In March of 1999 the Art Selection Committee will review the artists' proposals and recommend to the Public Stadium Authority Board a final slate of works that both complement the new facility and represent the most innovative thinking in contemporary art.
Phase I of the project — construction of the Exhibition Center and parking garage — is currently underway and is scheduled for completion in November, 1999. Phase II — removal of the Kingdome and construction of the football/soccer Stadium — will be completed by the summer of 2002.
